The vegetarian diet and cancer
You may have a general idea that a vegetarian diet is healthier for you. But do we really know much less the incidence of certain cancers among vegetarians?
Vegetarian diets are naturally low in saturated fat, high in fiber, and replete with cancer-protective phytochemicals, help prevent cancer. Large studies in England and Germany showed that vegetarians are 40 percent less likely to develop cancer compared with carnivores.
In the U.S., studies of Seventh Day Adventists, who are largely lacto-ovo vegetarians, have shown a significant reduction in cancer risk among those who avoid meat. Similarly, the breast cancer rates are dramatically lower in countries like China, which are plant-based diets. Interestingly, Japanese women who follow Western-style diets are meat eight times likely to develop breast cancer than women who follow a more traditional plant-based diet. Meat and dairy products contribute to many forms cancers, including colon, breast, ovary and prostate.
Harvard studies involving tens of thousands of men and women have shown that consumption regular meat increases the risk of colon cancer by about 300 percent. High-fat diets also encourage the body's production of estrogen. increase levels of this sex hormone has been linked to breast cancer.
