This beautiful stone comes in a light violet to a deep  purple colour and is the most well known of  gem varieties of quartz.  Amethyst has  been used for lapidary works and in jewellery since ancient times.

Nowadays most of the amethyst available for sale comes from Brazil and Uruguay. Before these sources were identified, most of the amethyst commercially available was mined in Germany (Idar-Oberstein region), Sri Lanka, India and the Ural Mountains  in Russia.

Amethyst Birthstone and other Traditions

Amethyst is the birthstone. for the month of February and the traditional anniversary gemstone for the sixth of marriage. It is also the Zodiac Stone the constellation of Pisces (February 20 - March 20).

In Ancient Greece, wearing  amethysts was believed to ward off the effects of drunkenness and amethyst necklaces were worn as amulets by inexperienced drinkers. This is how amethyst got its name - from the Greek "amethusos" meaning "not drunk".

Greek myths tell a story of Dionysius, the god of intoxication. One day  Dionysius was angry and swore revenge on the next mortal that crossed his path. Unexpectedly beautiful girl named Amethyst  passed Dionysius on her way to visit the goddess Diana. To protect her from all evil Diana turned Amethyst into a statue of beautiful pure crystalline quartz. As soon as Dionysus saw Amethyst's beauty, tears fell from his eyes. His tears stained the quartz statue  purple, creating the beautiful gem we know today.

In Egyptian times, the  Egyptians believed that amethyst could prevent the owner from being poisoned and many high ranking officials wore them to protect themselves.

In medieval times amethyst became the symbol for Christian love and devotion. The Churchmen wore Amethyst Jewelry so help give them wisdom and insights.

In crystal healing, Amethyst is said to bring serenity and calm.  It can  enhance one's ability to assimilate new ideas and aid in meditation. It is also thought to give strength and mental stability and to provide a balance between one's physical, emotional and intellectual states.
