What type of solder can I use to solder silver to fine stainless steel?
I have some 8mmx10mm silver bezels that I want to solder to a fine stainless croos steel and mount black star sapphire stones on the front of this 2"x3" necklace cross for my wife .I have great faith in all my community friends.Help!!!! LOL BOB
Use "easy flow" type silver solder. Note that this is a kind of solder specifically used for jewelery, I'd advise against using general-purpose silver solders. You can buy this type from online jewelry supply companies.
The stainless steel should be cleaned with fine sandpaper immediately prior to soldering. This removes the protective oxide layer that would normally prevent the solder from bonding. For this reason, an acid-type flux should be used. Be sure to clean the piece thoroughly with hot soapy water to remove the flux residue after you're done.
