Spinel - Rare and spectacular
Spinel Gemstone is the forgotten jewel of the world of gemstones, is not a birthstone and has no association as an anniversary gem. Species gemologists designate as Spinel comes in most colors, however, only a few are of gem quality.
The best sources of Spinel are Cambodia, Myanmar and Sri Lanka, with other good sources from Afghanistan, Brazil, Madagascar, Nigeria, Pakistan, Russia, Tanzania and Thailand.
Spinel gemstones are available in almost every color, but it's the ruby red variety, as it is the most coveted and sought after. The dyes are iron, chromium, vanadium and cobalt. Spinel has been confused with Ruby for many years, this is probably due to the fact that the gemstone deposits are located between Ruby and Sapphire.
Typical inclusions present in these rocks are the needles of rutile and very small octahedral crystals. Synthetic spinel has been done for almost one hundred years, not only imitate but Ruby Spinel too. Unlike a lot of precious stones, synthetic ruby is rarely irradiated or treated heat to improve their color, so you can assume with confidence that the stone will be as natural as can be.

Gahnospinel ... The color of these stones are very similar to gahnite, ranging from blue to dark blue or green color are a little iron less dense than gahnite.
Picotite ... Also called Chrome Spinel this is the variety of yellowish brown, dark green or black.
The first recorded use Spinel was ornamental a Buddhist grave in Afghanistan.

What is a black synthetic ruby crystal 6 pounds worth?
I have one, 6 black spinel crystal pound. As can be found, this is a great example of this type of glass .. individual octahedra in the group faces up to four inches in size .. Typical examples I see up in about an inch in size, everything is custer ten by ten inches! I have no idea what the value of something like this is .. any ideas?
I do not know. But yes spinel 6 pounds would be terribly rare. Especially considering that you really do not find any spinel outside Burma (or Myanmar, what is now called themselves) and Sri Lanka. Only recently there have been some small sites are in Vietnam, several parts of Africa, Russia and Australia. I guess you are European or American ... and really not spinels. Especially 6 pounds, 10 inches by 10 groups. Take it to your local jeweler for the evaluation ... and he tells you it is spinel.
