What is pyrite.

Pyrite (FeS2) is a very common mineral found in quarries. Pyrite can be found in the sedimentary rock. This material is excavated from quarries and used to make the backfill used under concrete floor slabs and other structures.

can iron pyrite be made by heating iron and sulfur?

i wasn't sure how the s-s bond in the persulfide was created. Also i read it's pyrophoric. How could it be cast or powdered safely?

Unfortunately, merely heating iron and sulfur together just produces
regular iron (II) or ferrous sulfide, FeS, which is more like the mineral
pyrrhotite. According to Dana (the book), pyrite is formed in either
magmas or sedimentary rocks, under just the right combination of
iron and sulfur (with sometimes traces of other metals) and in the
absence of oxygen to preserve the S-S bond. Merely heating iron
with sulfur in a test tube or crucible will break this S-S bond and
result in ordinary ferrous sulfide. Making FeS by heating was one
of the first experiments we tried in high school chemistry lab.
You can powder pyrite by breaking it up with a hammer; even though
pyrite is shiny, the powdered mineral is dark, almost black.
