Peridot forms the magma in the upper mantle, about 20-55 km deep, but is carried to the surface by tectonic and volcanic activity. Diamond, however, is much deeper in the mantle, about 100 to 150 miles beneath the surface pressure and temperature extremes.
The main source of peridot in the ancient world was Topazos Island, now known as Zabargad or San Juan Island in the Egyptian Red Sea. The island was discussed on the natural history of Pliny the Elder (23-79 AD) as having been explored in the fourth century BC was probably originally known Peridot like the Topaz, and only much later did the name to be applied to the gemstone we now know as the topaz. Peridot has been mined almost continuously Zabargad more than 3,500 years. But it is an interesting fact that the exact location of the island was lost for centuries and was only rediscovered in 1905. The small island, often shrouded in fog, is located about 35 kilometers from the Egyptian coast port of Beren.
Zabargad mining ended at the time of World War II. Today there are five main sources of peridot. Very good specimens from Burma, and new material from Pakistan, has generated considerable excitement in the gem world. Arizona and New Mexico in the U.S. are major producers of commercial-quality peridot, and Vietnam and China are especially are increasingly important suppliers.
The largest known cut peridot of 310 carats and is based in the Smithsonian in Washington, DC, a 192.75 carat stone is in the Diamond Treasury in Moscow; and a 146 carat peridot can be found in the Geological Museum in London, England. Peridot is a gemstone in small, relatively inexpensive, but the value rises stones over 5 carats, 10.15 carats very rare and expensive stones. There is no known treatment to enhance color or clarity of peridot, peridot as always untreated stone.
