The craters and caves in the mountains. Suswan, Kenya
Just 50 km from Nairobi, is described by many as the best day trip from the Kenyan capital, this little known double massive volcano crater is located very close to it is well known sister, Mt. Suswan is one of the most spectacular mountains and Rift Valley which has a 12-kilometer walk through the double crater, a broad network obsidian caves and a variety of animals and plants.
The caves are part of the lava tube system formed in an active period recent volcanic. They are totally different from the limestone caves. Lava tubes are relatively rare, and is believed to have formed when molten lava, the correct type and viscosity (Lava pahoehoe), running down a slope of an ideal angle. The outer layers cool and solidify, but the base continues to flow, and in some cases evacuated, it completely to leave behind a vacuum tube. Several unusual features are found and include lava ropes, benches, lava stalactites and stalagmites and a variety of formations secondary. The latter are produced by deposition of dissolved minerals in groundwater. The secondary deposits are exceptionally well at 35A Cave where suswan very unusual stalactites and stalagmites are beautiful. Many of these formations are very fragile and care must be very careful not to touch them.
These spectacular caves about 10 m high and in many places are preferred for caving enthusiasts. Bring a good flashlight and plenty of batteries. Do not go alone children to accompany adults, there are dangerous concessions drop (more than 10 m) in some places. The caves are extraordinary, their walls have a strange texture as the mass extended from the lava in retreat.
Hiking
After driving through the crater floor vastus in a good way down the inner crater a few hundred feet. This is a huge crater about 5 km wide and the center is a massive central plug. The whole area can be covered, including the inner crater rim and you can walk to the inner crater floor to the hot springs - there are clues, but you may need a guide. The summit crater Ol Doinyo internal calls Nyokie (the red mountain) to 7,222 feet Just park at the top of the road and follow the road to stick as close to the crater rim. You do not need a guide for this.
The walk to the main summit starts from the point of view. A steep section leads to grassy ridges with occasional trees. Where appropriate keep the mountain and reach the first summit (2250m) in approximately 1 hour. The ridge leading to the main peak here is hard and the pace is slow (1 h). The best thing is to return the same way that the complete circumnavigation takes about half a day and includes some very tedious crossing lava blocks in the south-east of the crater.
Camping
The area is now managed as The Nature Conservancy and suswan Camping is allowed - there a series of sensational points to the camp where you feel totally isolated. Bring all your own water and some shared with visitors to Masai. We take our dogs, and pitched in entrance to a cave called Lorang'amboli mass. Our dogs sleep in the car because of the hyenas and leopards. You can also camp in a spectacular spot among the acacias high head on the road overlooking the inner crater. At 500 shillings per head for citizens / residents and 500 for camping, and 500 per vehicle, this is more expensive other conservation areas. But the reward is that there is nobody else around and no evidence of lights on the horizon, the night sky was out of this world. The small animals can attack their camp at night if you leave the food.
Wildlife and plants
We saw some mammals large, giraffes, Thomsons gazelle, zebra, Klipspringer. At night the hyenas were heard and saw a genet. There are rumors of Leopard. The caves are full of bats and you can also see baboons and rock hyrax. This is a great place for birdwatching. Some plants here are extraordinary, especially around the mouth of the cave, others sage is mostly whistling thorn country Leleshwa in lava flows. We arrived after a long drought when the rains had begun recently, wildflowers were wonderful.
