Rough Diamonds, A Journey to Polish
Mines: Over 250 tons of ore must be extracted to give carats of rough diamonds. On the other hand, only about 20 percent of all rough diamonds are suitable for use as gems. Since diamond is the material most drive known to man, the rest of the diamonds are used for industrial purposes, such as cutting, drilling and grinding. Diamonds are mined in the area deepest Magma kimberlite pipes up to 75 miles deep called "blue rock" or "blue" and the area minus deep 50 to 60 feet below the earth surface called "yellow." Currently, over 90 percent of world supply of diamonds operates in South Africa. However, diamonds are also mined in Australia, South America, Russia and Canada.
Marking, which is the first step in the process of making diamonds is done after every rough diamond is analyzed to decide how it should be cut to give the greatest value. Here, the shape of rough diamond, and the number and location of impurities and imperfections are expected. Taking these factors into account, the planner decides how the diamond must be cut and "brands" to point where the stone should be cleaved or sawn.
Cleavage: Following a diamond is marked by particular stone, it is sent to a chopper or a sawyer. When the stone is very large and valuable, cleavage is a critical process, because a mistake by the planner or the cleaver can shatter the diamond. The job is cleaver to cut the diamond into two pieces, to seek the best angles and implement what will be the final cut.
Cutting: girdling or borough are terms that come by participating in cutting a round stone. Each diamond is placed in a tower with a second diamond held at his side, too slowly round-shaped cone. After the stone is the blocker, which puts the first 18 main facets of a diamond brilliant cut loose, after which he goes Brightener, which must place to stay the 40 facets. The above process, reduce by 58 facets apply to round brilliant Diamonds Loose. For fancy shaped diamonds set on the process rather varies.
Polishing: The final step in the loose diamond finishing process is polishing. The diamond alone is imposed on a rotating wheel that looks like a record turntable that is covered with diamond dust. Diamond dust is the gross imperfections polishes far smaller
