You won't be able to smooth a natural crystal without ruining it.
Now, if you are looking at a rock or an intergrowth of minerals, it may be possible to cut and polish one of the sample faces to bring out the details. A cut and polished gneiss with augen quartz or feldspar and good foliation can be a quite beautiful sample. I've done that before.
But natural crystals get their beauty from their natural symmetry and you cannot really polish this out without messing up the sample.
