It’s hard to imagine that a mineral with a name as mundane as corundum yields gems as exquisite as the ruby and sapphire, or even that these two stones, so different in color and mystique, are actually the same mineral family.
Lucky you if your birthstone is sapphire (September) or ruby (July). These are among the richest-colored of all gemstones with a romance and history as colorful as they are. Rubies are actually rarer than sapphires, and only red corundums are called rubies. Any other color is a sapphire. When grading colored stones, the density and hue of the color are part of the evaluation, and it’s the richest, deepest colors that are the most prized. In rubies, the most prized variant of color is called pigeon’s blood. Large gem quality rubies can be more valuable than comparably sized diamonds and are certainly rarer. There is a relative abundance of smaller, (1-3 carat,) blue sapphires compared to the scarcity of even small gem quality rubies, making even these smaller stones relatively high in value.
Stones of Burmese origin generally command the highest prices. The vast majority of rubies are "native cut" in the country of origin. High value ruby rough is tightly controlled and rarely makes its way to custom cutters. Occasionally, such native stones are recut to custom proportions, albeit at a loss of weight and diameter. Custom cut and recut stones are usually more per carat.
Sapphires exist in all the shades of blue from the deep blue of evening skies to the bright and deep blue of a clear and beautiful summer sky. Sapphires also come in many other colors, not only in the transparent grayish misty blue of far horizons, but also displaying the bright fireworks of sunset colors – yellow, pink, orange and purple. So sapphires are really and truly heavenly stones, although they are being found in the hard soil of our so-called "blue planet”.

Presence 'big Red "True North Gems' Greenland Ruby Keeps it grows
For many people, mention the words "Big Red" to fresh breath, but True North Gems (TSX.V: TGX) investors, the term itself is a breath of fresh air. flavor the company is daring to find favor with investors focusing the ruby and sapphire exploration and development in Greenland. According its news release on December 4, the Company completed its 2007 drilling program with the completion of the last four holes and drilling on the Sarfaq Ridgetop ruby prospects at its Fiskenaesset Ruby project. Ridgetop Sarfaq and are on trend Aappaluttoq ("Big Red") accident.
The Fiskenaesset Ruby Project consists of 110km2 of land on the southwest coast of Greenland, about 160 km south of the capital Nuuk. True North has an option to own a 100% Claims. The company has actively explored the property since its acquisition in 2004. A small bulk sample to the appearance Siggartartulik taken in 2004 returned 9.73 kg / t total corundum (rubies and sapphires are varieties of corundum), Gemstones of 1.5% and 33.5% near-gem. The gem quality is 143.76 g / t (718.8 rough ct / t). finalization of the company and the sorting machine of the material in the sample have recently increased overall score. A sample of 30 tonnes contained concentrations of gem-grade ruby and pink sapphire averaging 1,937 g / t (9.685 ct / t).
The objective of 2007 program of drilling, comprising 50 holes on three ruby prospects with a total length of over 5,000 m, was to provide a preliminary assessment on the ruby Aappaluttoq and pink sapphire occurrence. One positive outcome of the program is that the company was able to confirm both extensions to the favorable geology Aappaluttoq host a zone, and other ruby mineralization on surface. Three drill holes have confirmed the distinctive Sarfaq alteration sapphirine-gedrite-phlogopite-pargasite, similar to the reception area of the event Aappaluttoq it is known to contain rubies and sapphires roses.
Independent evaluations have prices a 0.69 ct ruby from Aappaluttoq to $ 3,220 / ct and 0.96 ct, a pink sapphire at $ 460/ct. The best sample contained a ruby crystal weighing 88g high (440 ct), which was carved in the Ruby Kita, weighing 302 carats and displaying complex scenes of Norse legends ocean.
The company 43-101 report suggests that this is a foretaste of things to come. He said: "In Given that 18 events sapphire ruby and pink are known in the area after only two seasons of reinvigorated exploration, and the Company has obtained excellent sampling results from three of six events tested by mini-bulk sample to date, it is for True North to continue exploring the district Fiskenaesset.
This report was published last year and since then, nine events ruby have been found at Fiskenaesset, for a total of 29. Over the past three years, 78 tons of equipment were removed to transformation, with 48 tonnes processed to date. More than 65,000 grams of gem and over 129,700 grams of near-gem ruby and pink sapphire have been recovered property.
In the wake of tough new sanctions on Burma, the supplier of 90% of world population and the ruby-boycott Burmese rubies by manufacturers and retailers of gemstone jewelry such as leading Tiffany's demand for ethical sources of colored stones rose dramatically. Today, consumers are willing to pay top-dollar high-quality gems from ethically-which was proved by the success enjoyed by marketing Canadian polar Diamonds. " True North plans to apply the same logic to the gem business colored.
The company has a major advantage in that the demand for rubies has been steadily rising while demand for diamonds has decreased. According sheet of the company makes Ruby-Diamond, in 1988, a ruby of good quality weighing 15.97 ct recovered $ 3.65 million ($ 228,252 per ct) at auction, still a diamond weighing 52.59 ct ranked sold $ 7,479,981 ($ 142,232 per ct). In 2006, however, a ruby weighing 8.62 ct $ 3.6 million dollars ($ 425,000 per ct) - while 33.04 ct diamond sold for 1.8 million dollars ($ 54,000 per ct). Keep in mind that the diamonds were on average 3-4 times larger than the rubies in this comparison. As gem-quality stones for more, their price per carat increases exponentially, even more than in the case of rubies of high quality.
In early November, the company reached a milestone when it opened its facility in Bangkok, where rough stones of the Fiskenaesset be sorting and grading. Bangkok is one of the major centers of industry colored gemstones. "With its near the established markets of Europe and Arab countries, and new growth areas of China and India, Bangkok is the international market for buyers of Rough Diamonds and polished in Wonderland, "noted Nick Houghton, Director and Vice President Product Development and Marketing in the News Company News November 6. "An office in Bangkok allows True North to access the knowledge and opportunities that exist there. "
True North also has the technological advantage, recent developments in exploration methods and technology of optical sorting. There was a time that Economic transformation favored manual sorting of colored gems in low-wage countries, but these new developments allow the operation of the business to be both ethical and profitable.
These latest developments should give something Fiskenaesset of company investors to chew over the coming months. To take a line of "Big Red" jingle-this is definitely one stock to "hold tight a little longer. "
